Gearbox Software released the first Borderlands in 2009 and helped define the looter shooter. It mixes first-person shooting with RPG levelling and a random weapon system that produces an absurd number of guns, each with its own manufacturer quirks, elemental effects and rarity.
Vault Hunters and Handsome Jack
The games follow Vault Hunters searching for alien vaults on the lawless planet Pandora and beyond. Borderlands 2 is often remembered for Handsome Jack, one of the most quotable villains of its era, while The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3 and the spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands kept the formula moving in new directions.
The cel-shaded art style, dark humour and four-player co-op are what make the series special. Borderlands game keys and DLC are a good fit if you want a shooter you can play for hours with friends while chasing that one legendary drop.
