Red Hook Studios released Darkest Dungeon in 2016 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It is a turn-based roguelike role-playing game about leading a group of flawed heroes into the ruins beneath a family estate, where something ancient has been woken up.

The game's most famous idea is stress. Heroes can break down under pressure and develop afflictions such as paranoia or masochism, and they pick up quirks that change how they behave in and out of battle. Light levels, party order and careful resource management matter as much as damage, and death is permanent. The ink-heavy art and the Ancestor's narration give it a strong gothic identity.
