Dead Cells, by French studio Motion Twin with later updates by Evil Empire, left early access in 2018 and quickly became a reference for the "roguevania" style. You control the Beheaded, a blob of cells that takes over a body in a cursed island prison and tries to escape.
Every run reshuffles levels and loot, but some progress stays: cells collected from enemies unlock new weapons and permanent upgrades, and runes open paths that let you take different routes. Combat is fast and precise, with a huge variety of swords, bows, traps and skills to combine.
