Fire Emblem games: tactics with lasting consequences
Fire Emblem, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, started on the Famicom in 1990. It is a turn-based tactics series where you move units across a grid, use the weapon triangle of swords, axes and lances, and plan every attack carefully.
Every unit matters
The series is famous for permadeath: in classic mode, a fallen character is gone for good. That makes each soldier feel personal, an effect strengthened by support conversations that build relationships between characters. Western audiences discovered the series through Marth and Roy in Super Smash Bros., and Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Engage brought it to a wider audience on Nintendo Switch.
