Pokémon games: catch, train and battle
Pokémon began in 1996 with Pocket Monsters Red and Green in Japan, developed by Game Freak for the Game Boy. The idea of travelling a region, catching creatures and trading them with friends grew into the highest-grossing media franchise in the world, with an anime, a trading card game and films alongside the games.
A new region every generation
Each main generation introduces a new region, new Pokémon and a new rival to beat on the way to the Pokémon League. Nintendo Switch titles such as Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet brought more open areas, and spin-offs cover everything from puzzle games to the fighting game Pokkén Tournament.
The turn-based battles are easy to learn but have a lot of depth for competitive players. Pokémon games and digital content here are tied to Nintendo platforms, so check the system and region before you buy.
