Super Mario games: the plumber who defined platforming

Mario first appeared as "Jumpman" in Shigeru Miyamoto's Donkey Kong in 1981, and Super Mario Bros. on the NES in 1985 made him Nintendo's mascot and gaming's best-known character. Its tight running and jumping set the standard for side-scrolling platformers.

Super Mario 64 did the same for 3D in 1996, followed by Sunshine, the Galaxy games and Super Mario Odyssey with its hat-throwing Cappy. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) brought fresh surprises to 2D. Beyond platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party and Paper Mario have become huge series in their own right.
