Metal Slug debuted in arcades in 1996 on SNK's Neo Geo, developed by Nazca Corporation. Players control soldiers of the Regular Army such as Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving, later joined by Eri and Fio, fighting General Morden's rebel forces across battlefields packed with enemies.
The series is famous for its hand-drawn pixel art, packed with tiny details and comic animations, and for its hectic run-and-gun action. You rescue bearded prisoners for power-ups, grab heavy machine guns and rocket launchers, and jump into the Metal Slug tank and other vehicles. Metal Slug 3 is often considered the high point, with branching paths and even alien invaders. Metal Slug Tactics (2024) reimagined the series as a turn-based roguelite strategy game.
