About Doom VFR

Doom VFR is a virtual reality first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, released on 30 November 2017. It takes the fast, brutal combat the series is known for and rebuilds it for VR headsets with tracked motion controllers. The story is set shortly after the demonic invasion of the Union Aerospace Corporation research facility on Mars. You are the last known human survivor, at least until your death, when a top-secret contingency protocol transfers your consciousness into an artificial brain matrix.

Reborn as a cybernetic security operative, you have one purpose: restore operational stability and stop the onslaught of demons by any means necessary. The campaign leads through all-new areas of the Martian facility that are not part of the 2016 game, and then down into the depths of Hell itself. Along the way you uncover the special abilities of your synthetic body, interact physically with the world around you and solve compact puzzles that break up the action and reveal more of what went wrong at the base.

Combat is built around the iconic weapons and demons of the series, seen from a completely new perspective. Imps, Hell Knights, Mancubi and other familiar enemies rush you at close range, and staggered foes can be finished with a telefrag, which sends you straight into their bodies. Movement is designed for comfort without losing speed: you can teleport across the arena with a time-slowing aim, or use jet-strafe dashes to dodge projectiles. Both systems can be combined freely, so experienced players can keep up the relentless pace the franchise is famous for.

The game is a single-player experience and needs a compatible VR headset with tracked controllers; a room-scale play area of about two by one and a half metres is required. Once your hardware is set up, you can unlock achievements and keep your progress in the cloud. The difficulty is adjustable, and comfort options let you tune movement and turning for longer play sessions. It is a strong showcase for anyone who wants to feel what classic shooter combat is like when the demons are standing right in front of you.
