id Software released DOOM in 1993, and it changed games forever. Fast movement, varied weapons, demonic enemies and networked deathmatch made the first-person shooter a genre, while its mod support built a creative community that still exists today.
DOOM II followed in 1994 and DOOM 3 took a horror turn in 2004. The 2016 reboot brought back speed with "glory kills" and a heavy metal soundtrack by Mick Gordon. DOOM Eternal (2020) added platforming and resource juggling, and DOOM: The Dark Ages (2025) gave the Doom Slayer a shield saw and a medieval setting.
