About DOOM (1993) + DOOM II
DOOM + DOOM II is the definitive, enhanced collection of the two shooters that defined the first-person genre. DOOM was created by id Software and released in 1993, and its sequel DOOM II followed in 1994. This edition was produced with Nightdive Studios, MachineGames and Romero Games, published by Bethesda Softworks, and runs on the KEX engine on Windows. It brings both games together with every official expansion and a brand-new episode in one package, while the original DOS versions are included as well.
The content is huge. Owners receive DOOM, DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, the Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living and Sigil, plus Legacy of Rust, a new episode created by id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames. A fresh pack of 26 deathmatch maps is also included. Altogether there are 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps, offering many hours of fast, precise combat against demons in corridors, arenas and hellish landscapes.
The enhancements make the classics comfortable today. Online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op support up to 16 players, while local split-screen allows up to four. An in-game mod browser gives access to community creations, and BOOM compatibility opens decades of fan work. Multithreaded rendering supports up to 4K, there is modern controller support, a weapon carousel, quick save and load, and improved mouse and keyboard controls. You can choose between the original MIDI music and modern recordings by Andrew Hulshult.
Accessibility was considered too, with a modern legible font, a high-contrast mode, text-to-speech and speech-to-text chat. The interface is translated into twelve languages. The gameplay remains pure: find keys, open secret walls, collect a growing arsenal from shotgun to BFG and survive ever larger hordes. The games contain intense blood, gore and violence along with strong language, and are rated 18 (Germany 18).
