Serious Sam was created by Croatian studio Croteam and debuted in 2001 with The First Encounter. While other shooters went slow and realistic, Sam "Serious" Stone faced hundreds of enemies at once in huge open arenas, from Egyptian temples onward.
The series is famous for its enemies, like the screaming Beheaded Kamikaze and charging Sirian Werebulls, its absurd arsenal and its tongue-in-cheek humour. Serious Sam 3: BFE, Serious Sam 4 and the spin-off Siberian Mayhem carried the formula forward, and the HD remakes of the early games, plus co-op for up to several players, keep it easy to jump in.
