Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE is a virtual reality first-person shooter developed by Croteam VR and published by Devolver Digital and Croteam Publishing, released on 9 November 2017. It brings the full campaign of the 2011 original into VR, a glorious throwback to the golden age of shooters where cover is for amateurs and pulling the trigger makes things go boom.
The story serves as a prequel to the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter. It takes place during Earth’s final struggle against Mental’s invading legions of beasts and mercenaries, sending Sam through ruined cities and ancient Egyptian sites in a desperate attempt to turn the tide of the war.
The headline feature is dual-wielding. With motion controllers you can hold a different weapon in each hand, pairing a scoped assault rifle with a double-barrelled shotgun or an automatic shotgun with the punishing minigun. The arsenal also includes a cannon that fires flaming cannonballs for those moments when the screen fills with enemies.
Combat is pure arcade-style action. There are no cover systems and no camping, just Sam against relentless waves of Werebulls, Kleer skeletons, Gnaars, bio-mechanoids and the famous headless kamikazes. Keeping the trigger held while moving and aiming in all directions is the only way to avoid being overrun.
Movement can be tailored to your comfort level. You can choose between teleport, blink teleport and classic full locomotion, with an optional comfort mode, so both newcomers to VR and seasoned players can find a setup that suits them during long and hectic battles.
Beyond the campaign, the game integrates with Serious Sam Fusion 2017. You can download player-made content and modifications from the Workshop, compete in versus modes such as Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Last Man Standing, or play the campaign together with up to 15 other players, including people using the regular non-VR version.
