Sonic the Hedgehog was created by Sega's Sonic Team, with character design by Naoto Ohshima and programming by Yuji Naka, and debuted on the Mega Drive in 1991. The blue hedgehog was built to be fast and full of attitude, and he became Sega's mascot almost instantly.
