Race across the Northstar Islands in 2D side-scrolling stages rendered with 3D graphics, choosing Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Amy and using their distinct abilities.

Chaos Emerald powers add movement and attack options. The campaign supports drop-in local co-op for 2–4, while Battle Mode supports local 2–4 and online competition for 2–8.
