About Broken Age
Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure from Double Fine Productions and legendary designer Tim Schafer, the creative mind behind Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle. Funded by one of the most famous crowdfunding campaigns in gaming history and released in two acts in 2014 and 2015, it marked a proud return of the classic adventure genre. This GOG version is the Complete Adventure, so both acts are included and the whole story can be played from start to finish.
The game follows two teenagers whose lives seem worlds apart. Vella Tartine lives in a village where young women are offered every few years to a monstrous creature called Mog Chothra, and she decides that she would much rather fight back. Shay Volta lives alone aboard a spaceship run by an overprotective computer that fills his days with harmless pretend missions, and he longs for real adventure. You can switch between the two heroes at any time, and slowly it becomes clear that their stories are connected in surprising ways.
Broken Age looks like a storybook come to life. Every scene is hand-painted, from the cloud town of Meriloft and the beach of Shellmound to the cozy, cartoonish corridors of Shay's ship. The voice cast is remarkable, with Elijah Wood as Shay, Masasa Moyo as Vella and appearances by Jack Black, Jennifer Hale, Wil Wheaton and Pendleton Ward. Composer Peter McConnell, known for Grim Fandango, wrote a warm orchestral score performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, which gives the adventure a truly cinematic feeling.
The puzzles reward careful observation, clever dialogue choices and creative use of items, and the second act asks you to combine knowledge from both heroes to move forward. The humor is gentle and witty, and the story touches on growing up, breaking free from traditions and questioning what others tell you. Broken Age runs on Windows, macOS and Linux with modest hardware needs. Fans of LucasArts classics and newcomers to the genre will find a charming, beautifully crafted adventure that is easy to start and hard to forget.
