About Commandos 2: Men of Courage
Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a real-time tactics game developed by the Spanish studio Pyro Studios and now published by Kalypso Media. First released in 2001 and available on Windows since 15 March 2007 in its current digital form, it is the second main chapter of a celebrated series about small special forces teams operating deep in hostile territory during the Second World War. Each mission drops your squad into a carefully built map where enemy patrols, sentries and vehicles follow strict routines, and you must achieve your objectives with careful planning and precise timing.
You control nine specialists, each with unique skills. The Green Beret can climb and carry bodies, the sniper eliminates targets from distance, the demolitions expert handles explosives, the driver operates vehicles and heavy weapons, the diver swims and uses a harpoon, the spy wears enemy uniforms to distract guards, the thief picks locks and slips through tiny gaps, and a trained dog carries items between team members. Combining these talents is the key to every scenario, since most problems can be solved in several different ways.
The isometric maps are some of the most detailed of their era. You can rotate the view through 360 degrees, zoom in and out and move seamlessly into buildings, submarines, ships and aircraft, where interiors are fully playable. Enemy vision cones show what each soldier can see, so you study patrol routes, wait for the right moment and act quietly. The campaign spans ten main missions across nine environments, from a U-boat base in Arctic ice and a fortified European town to Pacific islands and a busy harbour, with day and night settings and weather effects.
Interaction with the world is a highlight. Commandos can steal uniforms and weapons, climb poles, swing along cables, swim, drive jeeps, tanks and trucks and use bazookas or flamethrowers when stealth fails. Multiple camera windows can follow different team members in real time. Bonus missions reward careful play, and cooperative multiplayer lets friends share a squad. The game is rated 18 (USK 16; strictest official rating applied).
