About The Hex

The Hex is a single-player narrative mystery by Daniel Mullins Games, the studio behind Pony Island and Inscryption. It was released on Steam on 16 October 2018 and takes about six hours to finish on a first run.

On a stormy night the barkeep of The Six Pint Inn takes a crackling phone call: someone in the room is planning a murder. The six patrons are all washed-up video game protagonists, and the only way to find the culprit is to step into their memories. Each flashback becomes a different kind of game, from a side-scrolling platformer and a one-on-one fighter to a tactics battle and a top-down RPG, and the story keeps bending the rules of what a game is supposed to do. Expect dark humour, horror touches and plenty of surprises best left unspoiled.

Key Features

  • Six suspects – Every patron is a forgotten game hero with a past that plays out in its own genre
  • Genre shifts – Platforming, fighting, strategy, shooting and RPG segments woven into one story
  • Meta mystery – A narrative that toys with game design, developers and the player
  • Compact length – Around six hours for the first playthrough, with secrets for a second look
  • Steam extras – Achievements, Trading Cards and Cloud saves

PC Version and Compatibility

The key activates the game on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux. Requirements are modest: Windows XP or later, 2 GB RAM, DirectX 9 graphics and 1 GB of free space. The interface and subtitles are available in English, Polish, German, French, Italian, Spanish and several other languages, with voiced audio in English only. Play with mouse and keyboard, as no official controller support is listed.

Global Activation & What You Receive

You receive a digital Steam key for the standard game. It is a Global key with no regional restriction, so it works on a Steam account in any country. In the Steam client choose Games → Activate a Product on Steam, enter the code and the game is added to your library permanently.

Why Buy This Game?

Pick The Hex if you enjoy games that surprise you. Instead of polishing one genre, it uses half a dozen to tell a single mystery, and each switch says something about its characters and about the industry that made them. It is short enough to finish in a weekend, runs on almost any computer and is fully translated into Polish, German, French, Italian and Spanish, which makes it an easy recommendation for fans of experimental storytelling.

Related Games

The clearest next step is Inscryption, Daniel Mullins' later card game that hides the same fourth-wall tricks and creeping dread beneath a deck-building surface. Undertale shares the habit of questioning how players treat game characters, and its pixel-art cast reacts to your choices in ways few RPGs attempt. If the murder-mystery side of the tavern hooked you, The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark offers comic, bite-sized paranormal cases solved through classic point-and-click investigation. And Murdered: Soul Suspect turns detective work into a supernatural story, as a ghost hunts for clues about his own killing across a haunted town.
