About Circle Empires
Circle Empires is a compact real-time strategy game developed by the Dutch indie studio Luminous and published by Iceberg Interactive in 2018. It began life as a small free demo that more than 160,000 players tried, and the team then spent two years turning it into a full game. The idea is simple and clever: the world is made of round areas linked by narrow paths. Each circle holds resources, wild creatures, treasure or an enemy base, and you, as the god-like ruler of a tiny kingdom, set out to conquer them one after another.
Because the map is split into circles, every match is easy to read even when it becomes hectic. You start in a single home circle with a town centre and a few workers. Workers gather wood, stone and food, and you place buildings such as houses, farms, barracks, archery ranges and towers to strengthen your realm. Once you have an army you move it to a neighbouring circle, clear the creatures living there and claim it, which unlocks space for new buildings and new resources. Expanding too quickly is risky, though, because stretched borders are hard to defend.
There are more than 150 different creatures, buildings and resources, and the world is generated anew in every game, so no two campaigns look the same. Eighteen faction leaders each bring their own bonuses, from stronger archers to faster harvesting or cheaper buildings, which encourages different strategies. Units gain experience in combat and level up, becoming noticeably tougher. Twelve powerful boss monsters guard special circles, and defeating them earns rare rewards for your growing treasury. And yes, you can even grow pumpkins.
Matches are short and fast-paced, often lasting only fifteen to thirty minutes, which makes Circle Empires ideal for players who enjoy classic real-time strategy but do not always have time for long sessions. Several game modes, adjustable map sizes and difficulty levels let you choose between a relaxed build-up and a tough fight against aggressive AI opponents. The cheerful pixel-style art, readable interface and quick rhythm make it a great entry point to the genre, while its many leaders and random worlds keep veterans coming back.
