About APICO

APICO is a laid-back beekeeping sim about breeding, collecting and conserving bees, developed by TNgineers and published by Whitethorn Games, released on 20 May 2022 for Windows, macOS and Linux. You leave a boring city job behind and return to your family home in Port APICO to get back to your beekeeping roots. From that first small hive, a calm and surprisingly deep adventure across a chain of lush islands begins.

The game uniquely combines resource gathering, biology and beekeeping minigames, borrowing ideas from both real-life and fantasy apiculture and floriculture. You chop trees, collect flowers and gather materials, then turn them into hives, frames, tools and machines at crafting benches. Each new item unlocks fresh possibilities, so the loop of collecting, building and improving always gives you a clear next goal to work towards.

Breeding sits at the heart of APICO. By cross-breeding different bees you can discover more than 45 new species, each with traits such as lifespan, productivity, fertility and stability that you record in Beelia’s Almanac. Learning which pairings produce stronger or rarer offspring turns every hive into a small genetics experiment, and finding a brand new species after careful planning is a genuinely rewarding moment.

Your journey takes you through multiple biomes, each with its own unique bee species. Along the way you rediscover lost species, help repopulate the islands and release bees back into the wild. You can also discover solitary bees and craft new habitats for them, and catch and collect butterflies that each come with their own special effects, filling your collection with colourful finds.

Running a small business keeps the world turning. You make and sell honey, Apicola and other beekeeping products, then spend your earnings on better equipment and new blueprints. Characters such as the Skipper at the docks help you travel between islands and point you towards new areas, while the forgotten secrets of the APICO islands slowly reveal themselves as you explore further.

APICO also lets you play together with up to 3 other players, sharing hives and exploring the islands side by side. Once you have completed the game, modding support gives you even more to do. The developers also promote bee conservation and donate a portion of their earnings to national and international bee, beekeeping and wild bee conservation charities, adding a warm purpose to the project.

APICO runs on Windows 7 or later, macOS 11.5+ and Ubuntu 20.04 with a 4th generation Intel Core i5, integrated Intel HD graphics and only 250 MB of storage, and it offers partial controller support. For anyone who enjoys cozy life sims, relaxed crafting and collecting, and wants to learn a little about real bees along the way, it is a sweet and charming pick, completely sting free.
