About CrossCode
CrossCode is a retro-inspired action RPG developed by the German studio Radical Fish Games and published by Deck13. It was released on 20 September 2018 after a long and popular early access phase. The game combines the look of classic 16-bit adventures with fast, modern combat and a large world full of puzzles. You play as Lea, a mysterious girl who wakes up on a passenger ship with almost no memories and barely able to speak, and who must log into a futuristic online game to find out who she really is.
That game is CrossWorlds, a vast online world set on a real planet called Shadoon, where players control avatars from a distance. Lea quickly meets other players such as the cheerful Emilie, the quiet C’tron and the confident Apollo, and together they form a party that follows her through the story. The game captures the feeling of an MMO surprisingly well: you join guild chats, accept quests from other characters, trade with merchants and gradually explore towns, forests, deserts, snowy mountains and ancient temples, each with its own atmosphere, enemies and secrets.
Combat is fast and skill based. Lea can fight up close with melee attacks or throw energy balls that bounce off walls, and she can dodge, block and charge powerful combat arts. Over time she unlocks four elemental modes, heat, cold, shock and wave, each with its own skill tree and abilities. Enemies have clear patterns and weak points, and boss fights demand quick reactions and careful timing. The same ball mechanics are used in the many dungeons, where you bounce shots across rooms, switch elements and push blocks to solve elaborate environmental puzzles.
CrossCode is a long adventure that easily offers fifty hours or more, with plenty of optional quests, hidden chests, trading and arena challenges to master. Flexible assist options let you lower enemy damage, slow down puzzle timing or adjust combat speed, so the game can be as relaxed or as demanding as you like. The detailed pixel art, a memorable synth soundtrack and a heartfelt story about friendship and identity make it one of the most celebrated indie RPGs of recent years. Full controller support is included, and keyboard and mouse controls are also very precise.
