About Viewfinder
Viewfinder is a first-person puzzle adventure by Sad Owl Studios, published by Thunderful. Its core trick is simple to explain and hard to forget: hold up a picture, line it up with the world and place it, and whatever the picture shows becomes real, solid space that you can walk on, climb and use. Critics praised it widely, and it earned a Metacritic score of 84 on PC.
The pictures do not have to be photographs. Paintings, pencil sketches, screenshots and postcards can all be dropped into the world, each with its own style. A watercolour bridge can span a gap, a postcard can open a new path, and a rotated image can turn a wall into a floor. Much of the fun comes from realising that a problem you have stared at for minutes can be solved by looking at it from a different angle.
Later chapters hand you a camera of your own. Every shot you take captures part of the level, which you can then place somewhere else, duplicating objects, cutting through walls or building stairs out of thin air. Puzzles grow steadily from gentle introductions to clever multi-step challenges, and a rewind option lets you undo mistakes so experiments never feel costly.
The setting is a bright, dreamlike world of terraces, gardens and pastel architecture spread across several hub areas, each with its own theme. As you explore, you learn why this place exists and what its creators were trying to achieve. The story is player driven: you can focus purely on puzzles, or read notes and listen to recordings to understand the world in depth.
