El Hijo - A Wild West Tale is a spaghetti-western stealth game developed by Honig Studios, published by THQ Nordic Mobile GmbH and released on 3 December 2020. In it you guide a six-year-old boy on his quest to find his mother. The journey begins when a farmer and her son, El Hijo, are attacked by bandits who raze their farm to the ground. To protect him, the mother decides to leave the boy at a secluded monastery. El Hijo, however, soon decides that the monastic life is far from the life he wants, and he makes up his mind to escape and go looking for her.
Because he is only six years old, El Hijo must always sneak past the dangers of his world. The game is completely non-violent: there are no fights to win, and every obstacle is overcome with the mischievous playfulness of a young child. Shadowplay sits at the core of the experience, and the boy will often have to hide, merging with the shadows to stay out of sight of watchful monks, outlaws and other adults. As he overcomes each challenge, he gains self-confidence and cunning, and with them come more schemes for slipping past his foes.
His journey leads through a remote monastery, a harsh and unforgiving stretch of desert and a frontier town rife with crime and villainy. You solve playfully tricky environmental puzzles and use a playful arsenal of tactical toys, such as a slingshot, to distract and bypass diverse desperadoes. Without needlessly piling on new mechanics, the gameplay grows naturally: variations of familiar ideas are introduced step by step and then combined with each other to raise the challenge, and many of these twists come from the varied and increasingly dangerous environments the boy must cross. Along the way you also inspire other children toward the path to freedom.
The story of a brave son searching for his mother is told through a warm, hand-crafted art style, and its gripping storyline carries the adventure from the first escape to the final reunion.
