About Little Inferno
Little Inferno is a puzzle game developed and published by Tomorrow Corporation and released in November 2012. It comes from the creators of World of Goo and Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, and it was made by just three people with no office, no publisher and no outside funding. The game opens with a warm welcome: congratulations on your new Little Inferno Entertainment Fireplace. Throw your toys into the fire, play with them as they burn and stay warm, because it is getting cold outside.
Almost the entire adventure takes place in front of that fireplace. You order items from a catalogue, wait for them to be delivered, drop them into the hearth and watch what happens when they catch fire. The list of things to burn grows stranger as you go, including flaming logs, screaming robots, credit cards, batteries, exploding fish, unstable nuclear devices and even tiny galaxies. Burning items earns money to buy more from the catalogue, and every object reacts to the flames in its own surprising, often funny way.
The real puzzle lies in the combos. The game hints at special pairings of items with short, cryptic names, and discovering which objects need to burn together unlocks new catalogues and pushes the story onward. Working out these riddles turns a simple toy into a clever brain teaser. Meanwhile, letters arriving from a neighbour and other characters hint at the cold world just on the other side of the wall, and the story gradually invites you to look up, up, up out of the chimney.
Little Inferno runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and needs very little hardware: Windows XP, Vista or 7, a 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and only 200 MB of storage. Text is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese. The developers promise no in-app purchases, no ads and no upselling, describing the game as short and polished with zero waste. It is a single-player experience with a dark sense of humour and a surprisingly thoughtful message beneath the crackling flames.
