About WRATH: Aeon of Ruin

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is a first-person shooter developed by KillPixel Games and Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms and Fulqrum Publishing. Steam release date: 27 February 2024.

You are the Outlander, washed up on the shores of a dying world. The Shepherd of Wayward Souls tasks you with hunting down the last Guardians of the Old World, which takes you through ancient crypts, sunken ruins, corrupted temples and howling forests. Built on the original Quake engine, WRATH plays like a 90s shooter: fast movement, secrets everywhere, weapons with alternate fire modes and artifacts that turn a bad fight around. Saving costs a resource in the default mode, so you have to think about when to use it.

Key Features

  • Quake 1 engine – true 90s shooter feel.
  • Hub worlds – crypts, ruins and temples.
  • Alt-fire weapons – every gun has two modes.
  • Artifacts – powers to turn a fight.
  • Hulshult score – heavy, haunting music.

Related Games

WRATH is a dark-fantasy love letter to the Quake era, and AMID EVIL is its closest cousin today: another modern shooter with a retro look, mystical weapons and sprawling, otherworldly levels. To see where the formula came from, Quake remains the reference point, with the same engine roots, brown-and-grey gothic gloom and sharp movement. DOOM 64 is a good pick if you want something tighter and darker, a remastered console Doom with short, oppressive levels. And Quake II shows how the series moved into sci-fi, swapping crypts for alien bases while keeping the fast, weapon-switching combat.
