About Battle Brothers
Battle Brothers is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed by the small German studio Overhype Studios and first released in 2017. It is set in a gritty low-fantasy world where the old empires have crumbled into dust. The dead rise from their crypts, greenskin hordes gather on the horizon, bandits roam the roads and noble houses prepare for war. In such times ordinary people have little choice but to pay mercenaries for protection, and you take command of one of these companies, a band of hard men looking for coin, glory and a chance to survive another day.
The campaign takes place on a procedurally generated map, so every new company starts in a different world. You travel in real time across forests, hills, marshes and snowy steppes, visiting villages, towns and fortified castles. Settlements offer taverns full of rumours, markets for selling loot and buying gear, and new recruits for your growing band. Lords and town councils hand out contracts of varying difficulty, from escorting caravans and clearing bandit camps to hunting dangerous beasts. How you complete each task affects your relations with the factions of the realm and the renown of your company.
Every recruit has a background, such as farmhand, sellsword, hunter or disgraced noble, which shapes their starting abilities and traits. As they gain experience they level up, and you choose perks that turn them into shield-bearing frontliners, archers, two-handed axemen or support fighters. Equipment matters a great deal, because armour wears down and weapons behave very differently. You also have to pay wages, buy food and keep morale up, and wounded men may carry lasting injuries. Death is permanent, so losing a veteran hurts, and careful management of the roster is as important as success on the battlefield.
Battles are fought on hex-based maps with terrain, height differences and obstacles that the clever tactician can use. Shield walls, flanking, reach weapons and well-timed retreats all have their place, and a reckless charge is usually punished. Over time the world changes through major crises, such as noble wars, an undead plague or a full greenskin invasion, which demand new strategies and bring new opportunities. With several difficulty settings and an ironman mode, the game offers hundreds of hours of tough, rewarding play for fans of deep tactics and emergent stories.
