XIII is a first-person shooter and conspiracy thriller developed by Ubisoft Paris Studios and published on GOG by Microids. The President of the United States of America has been assassinated, and you are the world's prime suspect. The FBI, the CIA and a gang of murderous killers are all trying to hunt you down. Stricken with amnesia, you remember nothing, not even who you are. You are on your own and there is no one you can trust. All you have is a safe deposit key, a mysterious tattoo and a gun, and with them you must clear your name, solve the mystery and catch the true assassin before he strikes again.
The game brings the experience of the acclaimed comic book to life on your computer. Its cel-shaded graphics look like inked and coloured pages, and the narration borrows directly from comics: inset panels pop up on screen to show a guard falling off a ledge, a hand gripping a revolver or a car racing down the road, and sound effects appear as written words. This style gives every scene a strong graphic identity, from office lobbies with lift doors to a hidden missile silo full of rockets, and it still looks distinctive today.
The story is fast-paced espionage action. You fight your way forward with firearms and cold steel, from pistols and assault rifles to sniper rifles whose scope view lets you pick off enemies at long range. The violence is clearly shown, with blood, screams and a zooming kill cam when you land a head shot, which is why this game is rated for adults.
