About Old Man's Journey

Old Man's Journey is a soul-searching puzzle adventure developed and published by the Austrian studio Broken Rules, released on 17 May 2017. It tells a story of life, loss, reconciliation and hope, following an old man who leaves his house on a seaside cliff after receiving a letter and sets out across the country. The whole tale is told through pictures and gestures, so the meaning of each moment comes from what you see and how the music shifts around it.

The world is entrenched in a beautifully sunkissed, handcrafted style. Every hill, village, harbour and field is drawn by hand and animated frame by frame, giving the journey the feel of a picture book that slowly comes to life. As the old man walks, short vignettes of his memories open up, revealing precious moments, broken dreams and changed plans from his earlier years and quietly explaining why this trip matters so much to him.

Play revolves around a delightful landscape-shaping mechanic. You click and drag the hills in the foreground and background to raise or lower them, lining up their outlines so the old man can step from one ridge to the next. Later scenes add sheep, rolling wheels, trains, ladders and boats that react to your changes. The puzzles are handcrafted and pressure-free, with no timers or punishing fail states, so the focus stays on calm and inquisitive problem solving.

This is a compact experience, ideal for one or two relaxed evenings and easy to revisit for its art. An original, emotionally compelling soundtrack by SCNTFC follows every turn, and the crisp drawings are rendered at native resolution, staying sharp even on a 4K monitor. The game supports a mouse-only option, full controller support and saving at any time, and it runs on very modest hardware. Old Man's Journey is rated USK 12.
