About Patrician III

Patrician III is a medieval trading and economic simulation developed by the German studio Ascaron Entertainment, creators of the Port Royale series, and now published by Kalypso Media. First released in 2003, it is the sequel to the award-winning Patrician II. The game takes you to Northern Europe in the fourteenth century, when the Hanseatic League controlled trade across the North Sea and the Baltic. You start as a young merchant with a single ship and a little money, and your aim is to become one of the richest and most respected figures of the Hanse.

Trade is at the heart of everything. Each town produces its own goods, from grain, timber and bricks to cloth, fish, beer and spices, and prices rise and fall with supply and demand. By buying cheaply in one port and selling at a profit in another, you build up capital, then expand your fleet, hire captains and set up automatic trade routes. More than twenty historic cities can be visited, including Lübeck, Hamburg, Stockholm, London, Bruges, Oslo and Novgorod, and later voyages lead as far as the Mediterranean.

As your fortune grows you can invest in warehouses, workshops, farms and brickworks to produce goods yourself. Providing jobs and housing makes your home town flourish, and building roads, hospitals, schools and churches earns you reputation. With enough standing you can be elected Lord Mayor and later Alderman of the whole League, which brings political power and new responsibilities. Along the way you hold feasts, deal with town councils, respond to requests for help and manage the effects of changing seasons, frozen harbours and poor harvests.

The seas are dangerous as well as profitable. Pirates prey on trade routes, so you arm your ships, form convoys and fight naval battles, or hunt the pirates down for rewards. Some merchants choose a darker path of smuggling and privateering, which offers fast money at the risk of your reputation. The adaptive AI adjusts to your play, and several scenarios, a free game mode and adjustable difficulty give the game a great deal of depth. It remains a rich, relaxed classic for anyone who enjoys watching an empire grow from a single cog.
