OFF is a surreal role-playing game created by Mortis Ghost and developed together with Fangamer, which also publishes it. First released as a freeware cult classic in 2008, it arrived on PC in a full remaster on 15 August 2025, with refreshed visuals, rearranged music and new content built on top of the original story.

You take control of the Batter, a silent figure in a baseball uniform who claims to have a sacred mission: to purify the world. The game addresses you directly as the puppeteer, the soul guiding him, and the line between player and character becomes part of the story as the journey grows darker and more ambiguous.

Your guide is the Judge, a talkative cat with an enormous grin who appears at key moments to explain the rules of each place, offer cryptic advice and save your progress. His polite, formal speech contrasts sharply with the bleak, strange world around him and with the blunt, single-minded Batter.

The world is divided into zones, each ruled by a guardian and populated by pale, nervous workers called Elsen. You explore smoke mines, meat factories, libraries and amusement parks, ride swan boats and trains between areas, and solve block puzzles, locked doors and riddles to reach the next section of every zone.

Battles are turn-based. The Batter fights alongside three floating rings called Add-Ons, which can attack, heal and support him, while competences provide special skills that cost points. Spectres take many bizarre forms, and learning which statuses and elements to exploit is the key to surviving the tougher encounters near each guardian.

The art mixes simple top-down maps with striking hand-drawn backgrounds, and the soundtrack combines eerie ambient pieces with driving tracks, including the famous battle themes. The remaster keeps the unsettling atmosphere of the original while adding new areas, cleaner menus and support for seven languages, making it more accessible than ever.

OFF suits anyone who enjoys story-driven indie RPGs with dark humour, strange characters and an ending that invites long discussion. It moves at a measured pace, rewards curiosity about every odd corner of its world, and remains a landmark for the many surreal role-playing games that followed in its footsteps.

PC Version and Compatibility

OFF is activated in the Steam client, so a Steam account is required. The key covers the Windows version, which needs Windows 10 (21H1), an Intel or AMD processor with SSE2, 2 GB of memory, a DirectX 10 capable graphics card and 2 GB of storage; macOS and Linux builds are also available. Partial controller support includes DualShock and DualSense pads, and the text is available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, German and Japanese.
