About Meg's Monster
Meg's Monster is a story-driven indie role-playing adventure developed and published by the Japanese studio Odencat. Released on 2 March 2023 for Windows, macOS and Linux, it tells a short but heartfelt tale set in a creepy-cute underworld, presented in the vibrant pixel art style the studio is known for.
The Underworld is a land of monsters and mutants who usually eat humans for breakfast. Roy, a hulking ogre with no taste for people, and his scheming partner Golan stumble upon Meg, a lost little girl. They quickly discover a terrifying secret: whenever Meg starts wailing in fear, the sky turns blood red, the ground shakes and the whole world edges towards the apocalypse.
The only way to prevent disaster is to take Meg safely back to her mother. That simple mission sends the unlikely pair across forests, ruins, towns and stranger places, where monsters, bounty hunters and Underworld officials all have their own plans for a human child who has wandered into their world.
Battles turn the classic formula upside down. Roy starts with 99,999 HP and is almost impossible to defeat, so the danger lies in Meg’s mood and never in his health bar. You guard her, absorb blows and hand over her favourite toys to keep her calm, because if her tear meter fills up, it is game over for everyone.
Every major fight adds its own mechanic or mini-game, from timing challenges to puzzles that change how each encounter has to be approached. Some defeated foes can even be won over through optional sub-events, which adds new scenes and helps flesh out the colourful cast of residents you meet along the way.
The presentation leans on expressive pixel animation, gentle humour and a soundtrack that shifts smoothly from cosy campfire tunes to tense boss themes. Full controller support, cloud saves and a compact length of a few hours make it easy to enjoy in short sessions or in a single relaxed weekend.
Meg's Monster suits anyone who enjoys emotional, story-first indie RPGs with a clever twist on familiar mechanics. What starts as a light-hearted tale about two misfits slowly grows into something more moving, as Roy and Meg uncover the mysteries surrounding the Underworld and themselves, leaving a story that lingers long after the credits.
