Fossilfuel 2 is a first person horror shooter developed and published by the independent DangerousBob Studio and released for Windows PC on 19 February 2024. It is the sequel to the original indie game Fossilfuel and pushes the idea much further with Unreal Engine 5 graphics, smarter artificial intelligence and a larger range of weapons. The tone is pure survival horror, built around dinosaurs, flooded corridors and sudden scares in the dark.

You play Jack Allen, a member of an expedition sent to investigate a disaster at the Sierra Research Facility in Alaska. The base was once a beacon of cutting edge research, but its dinosaurs escaped and the complex was cut off from the mainland. On the way there, a gigantic Megalodon attacks the boat, and the shipwrecked crew must survive on the shore and find a way to escape the island alive.

The journey lasts around twelve hours and leads through flooded tunnels, puzzle filled bunkers and dark corners full of jump scares. The base uses a dynamic sandbox layout, so you can revisit areas, upgrade your weapons and clear sections to create safe zones. Draining water from flooded parts of the facility opens new routes, turning exploration into a steady process of reclaiming territory from the creatures that hunt you.

Much of the game takes place in flooded hallways and rooms. You have to put on scuba gear and face the monsters of the deep, which gives the campaign a strong focus on underwater horror. The cast of dinosaurs is large and includes the Utahraptor and the Spinosaurus, while the sea hides even bigger threats. Every dark pool of water becomes a reason to slow down, listen carefully and check your ammunition.

A massive arsenal lets you fight back. Shotguns, rifles and other weapons blast the dinosaurs apart in gory detail, and upgrades make each gun more useful as the base opens up. The environment is dangerous as well, with puzzles that keep you alert and paths that require careful planning. The challenging artificial intelligence reacts to your actions, so every encounter plays out differently and no two playthroughs feel quite the same.

The story offers multiple endings, and choices made during the adventure change the course of events. That encourages a second run to discover what else is hidden in the facility and uncover the full truth behind the outbreak. After the campaign, a sandbox mode inspired by classic physics playgrounds can be unlocked, where you spawn characters, watch them fight or build a house with the block spawner, plus a level editor for custom creations.

The game needs Windows 10 64-bit, a quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and an RTX 2070 class graphics card, though graphics can be scaled down for weaker hardware. Full controller support, achievements and leaderboards are included.
