About Renowned Explorers: International Society
Renowned Explorers: International Society is a strategy roguelite adventure developed and published by the Dutch studio Abbey Games, creators of Reus. It was released on 2 September 2015. Set in a colourful, lighthearted version of the nineteenth century, it lets you assemble a team of three explorers and set off on expeditions around the world. Your goal is to become the most renowned explorer of your time by discovering treasures, uncovering ancient mysteries and outshining rival expedition leaders such as the ambitious Ernst Shackleton and the mysterious Mr. Monroe.
Each campaign consists of five expeditions chosen from a range of destinations, including Egyptian deserts, Aztec temples, haunted castles, tropical islands and frozen landscapes. On every expedition you move across a map of events, deciding which paths to follow and which risks to take. Encounters are written with plenty of humour and give you choices that test the skills of your team, from speech and science to archaeology, so the composition of your party really matters. Along the way you gather supplies, gold, research and the renown that decides who wins the campaign.
Combat is turn-based and played on a hex grid, but brute force is only one option. Every action can be aggressive, devious or friendly, and these attitudes affect the mood of your opponents. You can defeat enemies by fighting them, by talking them into surrender, by scaring them away or even by befriending them. Wild animals, rival explorers, pirates and spirits all react differently to your approach, and the moods you create apply strong bonuses or penalties. Planning the right mix of attacks, insults and compliments is the key to victory in many battles.
There are twenty explorers to choose from, such as scientists, fighters and speakers, each with unique abilities and traits, and new ones unlock as you play. Between expeditions you return to your headquarters to spend research, buy equipment and prepare for the next destination. A single campaign takes around two to three hours, which makes it perfect for repeated runs with different teams and strategies. Several difficulty levels, randomised maps and a wide variety of encounters keep every playthrough fresh, and the charming hand-drawn art gives the whole adventure a warm, storybook feeling.
