About Rogue Legacy
Rogue Legacy is a 2D action platformer with rogue-lite progression, developed and published by the brothers at Cellar Door Games. It was released on 27 June 2013 for Windows, and later for macOS and Linux. The studio calls it a genealogical rogue-LITE: every time your hero dies, one of their children takes up the sword, and the quest to conquer Castle Hamson continues across the generations of a single, increasingly stubborn family.
Each run begins by choosing one of three heirs, and every heir is unique. Traits are inherited at random and change how a run feels. Colour blindness turns the screen black and white, gigantism makes you huge, dwarfism makes you tiny, vertigo flips the world upside down, and some heirs are simply very good at hitting things. Alongside traits, heirs belong to classes such as Knight, Mage, Barbarian, Knave, Miner, Shinobi, Spellthief and Lich, each with its own strengths and spells.
The castle is randomly generated on every visit, so no two runs share the same layout. It is split into four zones with their own enemies and hazards, and you will meet over 60 types of foes, from flying eyeballs to armoured knights, plus several large bosses guarding each area. Combat is tight and demanding: you jump, slash downward, cast spells and dash through traps while learning enemy patterns. Gold you collect is spent between runs, so even a failed attempt pushes the family forward.
That money builds and upgrades the family manor, a growing skill tree that raises health, damage and mana, unlocks new classes, and opens shops for runes and equipment. Runes add effects such as extra jumps, vampiric healing or air dashes, while the architect can lock the castle layout for a price. The result is a loop of short, fun attempts with steady long-term growth. The game shows cartoon fantasy violence and is rated 12 (Germany 12).
