About STAR WARS Episode I: Racer

STAR WARS Episode I: Racer is the classic high-speed racing game based on the famous podrace from Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Originally developed by LucasArts and released in 1999, it became one of the best-loved Star Wars games of its time, and this updated version brings it to modern Windows PCs. You climb into the cockpit of a podracer, a tiny pod pulled by two enormous jet engines on cables, and race against a field of rivals at simulated speeds of up to 600 miles per hour.

You can take the controls as young Anakin Skywalker or choose from more than twenty other pilots, including Sebulba, Gasgano, Ben Quadinaros and Mawhonic. Each podracer has its own values for traction, turning, acceleration, top speed, air brake, cooling and repair. Winning races earns prize money that you spend on better parts at Watto’s shop or at the junkyard, gradually improving your pod. Engines overheat if pushed too hard with the boost, and damaged parts can be repaired on the fly, so managing your machine is part of the challenge.

The tournament spans more than twenty-one tracks across eight different worlds. Alongside the Boonta Eve Classic on Tatooine, you race through the icy canyons of Ando Prime, the methane lakes of Baroo, the floating cities of Ord Ibanna and many other striking locations. Every course is packed with shortcuts, jumps and hazards, from meteor showers and flaming pits to Tusken Raiders taking shots at passing racers. With rivals willing to do anything to cross the finish line first, every race is tense right up to the last lap.

The racing is fast, simple to pick up and very hard to master. Learning the best lines, timing your boosts and balancing speed against overheating turns a close finish into a confident win. A single-player tournament with several leagues, free play and time trials keeps you busy, and the authentic engine sounds and orchestral music taken directly from Episode I add to the atmosphere. For fans of the films and of arcade racers alike, it remains one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the speed of a Star Wars podrace.
