About Solo Flight

Solo Flight is a flight simulator created in 1983 by the legendary Sid Meier and first published under the MicroProse label. It was one of the first realistic flight simulators and possibly the first to include a game mode designed to test your skills as a pilot. There is no autopilot and no computer-aided navigation here, just old-school dial-based instruments and your own judgement at the controls of a small plane.

Navigation is part of the challenge. You can fly by visual flight rules when the horizon and landmarks are clear, but once bad weather takes them away you switch to instrument flight rules and rely on VOR navigation, the short-wave radio signals sent from ground stations and airports. Maps and accurate small-plane instrumentation help you plan each route across Colorado, Kansas and Washington/Oregon.

To give every flight a purpose, Meier created the Mail Pilot mode, where your task is to deliver mail bags to regional airports in the least amount of time. Loading more fuel and cargo raises your score but slows you down and makes the plane harder to fly, while deteriorating weather and mechanical emergencies add surprises. Your landings are graded too, so coming in too fast, stalling, turning too sharply on the ground or taxiing off the runway all cost points.

Solo Flight runs on Windows 7 via DOSBox and is available in English, with four difficulty levels and a detailed 15-page manual full of tips for less experienced pilots. It is a lovely pick for retro PC collectors, fans of Sid Meier’s early work and anyone curious about how flight simulation began. Plot your course, watch the needles and land that mail on time.
