The Forever Winter is a tactical survival shooter developed and published by the independent studio Fun Dog Studios for Windows PC, launched in Early Access on 24 September 2024. It is set in a grim future where ecological collapse and runaway technology have fuelled 40 years of industrial scale war between two military superpowers, and you belong to neither side.

You are a small fish in a big apocalypse. Far from a heroic soldier, you play a scavenger trying to survive another day by slipping into active battlefields, looting the dead and getting back out alive. The armies fighting around you field AI automata, cybernetically enhanced soldiers, human and machine hybrids and gigantic war machines that tower over the landscape.

The heart of the game is its Dynamic Encounter system. Enemy factions operate in coordinated groups with their own goals, fight full scale battles against each other and react intelligently to your actions. At first they may ignore you, but the more you disrupt their plans the harder they try to remove you, and the battlefield you leave is rarely the same one you return to.

Choosing what to carry is a constant gamble, because a heavier haul means better rewards back home but also more risk on the way out.

Everything you bring back feeds your progress between expeditions, from better gear and weapons to the resources your hidden community needs to keep going. The run is played solo or together with a small squad of other players, and teaming up makes it easier to cover angles, share loot and drag each other out of trouble.

The visual direction is one of the most striking parts of the game. Smoke, fire, black suns and endless wreckage paint a bleak, almost painterly vision of war, and the sheer scale of the machines makes every encounter feel overwhelming.
