About When The Past Was Around

When The Past Was Around is an adventure point-and-click puzzle game about love, moving on, letting go, and the joy and pain of everything in between. It was created by Mojiken and published by Toge Productions in September 2020, with art by the Indonesian artist Brigitta Rena, who previously made A Raven Monologue and She and The Light Bearer. Her soft, hand-drawn illustrations carry the whole experience, giving each scene the feel of a page from a personal sketchbook.

This is the story of Eda, a girl in her early twenties. Like anyone her age, she is lost: lost on the way to her dreams and lost on the way to love. That changes when she meets The Owl, the man who helps her rekindle her passion, who shows her the spark in a relationship, and who also teaches her about heartbreak. Their bittersweet tale unfolds in a surreal world made of disjointed rooms drawn from memories and time, and every clue you gather, every puzzle you solve and every door you unlock brings Eda closer to the secrets she once knew.

The story is told through pictures with no words or dialogue, so the drawings, small objects and expressions say everything. Rooms hide boxes, locks and mechanisms to examine, and the brain-teasing puzzles are tied closely to the memories being uncovered. An atmospheric violin score accompanies Eda from peaceful days to the angstiest moments, and it often hints at the mood of a scene before anything happens on screen. The game is personal yet universal, about overcoming the past and finding yourself again.

It is a short, silent narrative experience that can be finished in under two hours, and the team put their hearts into making that brief time deep and meaningful. It is a fine pick for a quiet evening, for players who like gentle puzzles, or for anyone who appreciates illustrated stories. The game runs on Windows, macOS and offers 16 interface languages including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Japanese and Indonesian. Its modest requirements mean it plays smoothly on almost any laptop or desktop.
