About Black The Fall

Black The Fall is a cinematic puzzle platformer developed by the Romanian team Sand Sailor Studio and published by Square Enix. Released on 11 July 2017 for Windows, it draws on the developers’ own memories of life under the communist regime in Romania and turns them into a bleak, atmospheric journey. You control Black, an old machinist who has spent decades toiling in a grim industrial complex. Tired of a life of forced labour and constant surveillance, he finally decides to plot his escape through manipulation and scheming.

The world around Black is cold and oppressive. Giant propaganda screens broadcast the face of the leader over crowds of exhausted workers, armed guards watch from towers and automated sentries patrol every corridor. Freedom seems impossible, yet along the road Black befriends the most unlikely ally: a small abandoned robot. Together the two outcasts must solve puzzles, outwit the system and slip through a crumbling world in the hope of reaching a better life. The story is told without dialogue, entirely through visuals, sound and gesture.

The key mechanic is a laser pointer that Black steals early in the adventure. With it he can command other workers and machines, turning the tools of the regime against itself. Many puzzles ask you to coordinate Black’s movement with his robot companion, who can reach places he cannot, activate switches and carry objects across dangerous areas. Timing, observation and careful use of the environment are essential, and the game rewards players who stop to study each scene before acting.

Visually, the game relies on a striking palette of black, grey and harsh red light, with industrial halls, rain-soaked squares, flooded tunnels and enormous walking machines dominating the horizon. The quiet sound design and haunting music build constant tension, and each new area reveals a little more about the regime and Black’s past. Hidden collectibles reward thorough exploration and add extra layers to the story. The game is rated 16 for violence (ESRB T, PEGI 12, DEJUS 14).
