About Stacking

Stacking is a third-person puzzle adventure from Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Productions, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend. It first appeared on consoles in 2011, and the PC version followed on 6 March 2012. The game is set in a vintage world inhabited entirely by living Russian stacking dolls, presented like an old silent film with title cards, piano music and a soft grain on the image. It is an unusual premise, and the studio builds a whole adventure around it.

You play as Charlie Blackmore, the smallest stacking doll in the world. His family has fallen on hard times, and his older siblings have been taken away and forced to work for a cruel industrialist known only as the Baron. Charlie sets out to find them and bring them home. Along the way he meets a cast of eccentric characters, from grumpy porters and snooty aristocrats to a group of travelling hobos who help him on his mission.

Charlie’s size is his greatest strength. He can jump into any doll that is exactly one size larger than himself and take control of it. That doll can then hop into an even bigger one, and so on, building a stack. Every doll has its own special ability. Some can whistle to distract guards, some charm others with a sweet song, some break through walls and others create a mess that clears a crowded room.

These abilities are the tools for solving the puzzles. Each challenge, such as getting past a guard or reaching a locked cabin, can be solved in several different ways. Finding one solution lets you continue the story, but discovering every option earns extra rewards. The game also contains dozens of optional pranks called hi-jinks, small acts of mischief such as making a doll slip or startling a group of passengers. They are a big part of the humour.

Charlie’s journey takes him through several lovingly crafted locations. A bustling Royal Train Station acts as the central hub, from which you travel to a luxurious steamship, a high-flying zeppelin and a seaside safari. Every area is full of dolls to collect and matching sets to complete. Collected dolls are displayed in Charlie’s secret hideout, and a family album records every adventure. The world looks hand-made, with wooden textures, painted cardboard and warm lighting.

The PC version includes The Lost Hobo King expansion for free. In this extra adventure Charlie helps the hobo Levi and his uncle Rufus reclaim a lost crown in the mysterious kingdom of Camelfoot. It adds new puzzles with multiple solutions, a fresh set of dolls with new abilities and more hi-jinks to discover. The PC release also includes a concept art browser, along with partial controller support and full audio support in five languages.

Stacking runs on Windows XP SP3 or higher with a 1.8 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 256 MB graphics card, and it needs 1.5 GB of space, so even older PCs can handle it. For players who enjoy charming adventures, clever puzzles with many answers and the distinctive humour of Double Fine, it offers a cosy and creative experience that feels just as fresh today as when it first appeared.
