About Owlboy

Owlboy is a story-driven platform adventure developed and published by the Norwegian studio D-Pad Studio and released on 1 November 2016. You play as Otus, a young owl from the village of Vellie, a peaceful settlement high above the clouds. Otus cannot speak, and he struggles to live up to the expectations of his strict mentor Asio and the other owls. When sky pirates suddenly attack the village, his quiet life is turned upside down and a long journey begins.

As an owl, Otus can fly at any time, and this freedom shapes the whole game. Floating islands, windy canyons and vast open skies invite you to explore in every direction. Flight is smooth and precise, so you can hover above a gap, rise along a waterfall or drop down into a narrow tunnel. Many secrets are tucked away in hidden corners, and coins collected on the way can be spent on useful upgrades in the hidden shop of a curious merchant.

Otus cannot fight much on his own, but he can carry almost anything. His most important ally is Geddy, a cheerful mechanic who fires a pistol while Otus holds him in the air. Later the team grows with Alphonse, a pirate with a powerful blunderbuss, and Twig, who throws sticky webs to pull distant objects closer. You can switch between these gunners at any moment, and each of them opens new ways to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

The world is split into calm towns and demanding dungeons. In towns you chat with residents, take on small tasks and learn more about the history of the sky islands and the mysterious owl relics. Dungeons combine platforming, puzzles and combat. You move heavy blocks, light torches, activate ancient mechanisms and dodge traps while searching for the way forward. Each dungeon ends with a large boss battle that tests everything you have learned up to that point.

The pixel art is one of the most striking parts of Owlboy. The studio spent close to a decade creating the game, and every scene is drawn with remarkable care. Characters have expressive animations, backgrounds are layered with clouds, plants and distant ruins, and the lighting changes between warm villages and gloomy caves. The orchestral soundtrack by Jonathan Geer accompanies the journey with gentle melodies in quiet moments and powerful themes during the biggest battles.

The story is surprisingly emotional for a colourful platformer. It deals with self-doubt, loyalty and the weight of expectations, and it gives each character a personal arc. A playthrough takes roughly eight to twelve hours, depending on how many secrets you hunt down. The game offers full controller support, achievements, trading cards, cloud saves and leaderboards for its challenges. Dialogue is presented as text, while gestures and music carry the emotion of the tale.

Owlboy runs on Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 10 with a dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a graphics card with Pixel Shader 3.0 support, and it needs only 600 MB of space. Anyone who loves exploration, carefully designed puzzles and detailed pixel art will find a warm and memorable adventure here. It is a game about learning to believe in yourself, told with humour, heart and a sky full of wonders waiting to be discovered.
