About Is this Game Trying to Kill Me?
Is this Game Trying to Kill Me? is a first-person horror puzzle game developed and published by the small studio Stately Snail and released on 12 November 2024. You wake up inside a cramped cabin deep in a dense forest, next to the skeletal remains of a previous visitor. Moments later a sinister host with a wide grin slides in through the window and makes an offer: complete the old computer game on his desk, and you may walk away free and even rich.
The game on that computer is a pixel art dungeon adventure set in a candlelit castle, and it quickly becomes clear that it is far from harmless. The cabin and the game are connected in ways that are both clever and frightening. Traps from the dungeon begin to appear in reality, while your actions in the cabin change what happens on the screen. Very soon you realise that the stake in this little game is your own life, and every careless move can end it.
Most puzzles require you to switch between both worlds. A scrambled cabin door is restored by solving a sliding tile puzzle on the computer, light bulbs placed in a wall grid reveal a safe path through a room of spikes, and a tap in the kitchen helps drain a pool in the castle. A chest that is empty in the dungeon may suddenly open in the cabin and hold the item you need. Thinking across both spaces is the key to escaping.
Mistakes are punished in memorable fashion. Step on a trap in the pixel castle and the same fate reaches you in the cabin, whether that means spikes bursting through the floor, an arrow shot from the wall or a chair that drops you into deep water. These gruesome scenes are part of the dark humour of the game, and they make each solved puzzle feel like a narrow escape. There are numerous ways to die, and discovering them is part of the fun.
The cabin grows as the story unfolds. New rooms open, a basement waits below, and walls can be torn down to create shortcuts. Every room contains a monitor that shows the computer game in real time, which helps when a solution is visible on the screen. Puzzles include symbol matching, candle sequences, mechanical locks and a ritual guided by an old book. Several of them can be solved in more than one way, and some even let you trick the host.
If you get stuck, an optional hint system offers up to three clues per puzzle, from a gentle nudge to the full solution, and using it carries no penalty. A typical playthrough takes around two to four hours, depending on how quickly you see through the riddles. Multiple endings reward curious players, and one of them adds extra scenes that expand the lore. Achievements, cloud saves and full controller support are included, so you can also play comfortably from the sofa.
Is this Game Trying to Kill Me? runs on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or higher with a 3.0 GHz processor, 6 GB of RAM and a graphics card with 2 GB of video memory, and it needs 5 GB of space. For anyone who enjoys escape rooms, creepy cabins and puzzles that reach beyond the screen, it is a compact, inventive and darkly funny horror adventure that keeps asking whether the game in front of you can really be trusted.
