Commandos 2 - HD Remaster is the high-definition version of the celebrated real-time tactics game originally created by Pyro Studios in 2001. The remaster was developed by Yippee! Entertainment together with Pyro Studios, published by Kalypso Media, and released on 24 January 2020 for Windows, macOS and Linux. It keeps the original missions and demanding design of Men of Courage while adding sharper visuals, reworked controls, a modernised interface and a new tutorial for players who are meeting the series for the first time.
You command a small team of specialists sent deep behind enemy lines during the Second World War. Nine unique commandos are available, including a green beret, a sniper, a demolition expert, a diver, a spy and a thief, each with skills the others lack. Success depends on combining them: one distracts a sentry, another slips past to cut a fence, a third covers the escape. Guards have visible cones of vision, so every move is a puzzle of timing, positioning and patience.
The campaign offers ten missions across nine environments inspired by real wartime locations, played in day and night with changing weather. Levels are large and interactive. You can steal enemy uniforms and weapons, climb poles, swing along cables, swim, drive vehicles and move in and out of buildings, ships, planes and submarines. The camera rotates a full 360 degrees and zooms smoothly, which helps you read crowded bases and plan routes. Jeeps, tanks, trucks, bazookas and flame-throwers are all part of the arsenal.
How you tackle each objective is up to you, and the game rewards careful observation over brute force. Quick saves let you experiment with bold plans, while full controller support makes the HD edition comfortable on a sofa as well as at a desk. The remaster is a faithful way to experience a genre classic with modern comfort. It contains realistic war violence, references to alcohol and tobacco, and coarse language, and is rated 16 (Germany 16).
