About Cossacks: European Wars

Cossacks: European Wars is a historical real-time strategy game developed by GSC Game World, originally released in 2001 and republished digitally in August 2011 by GSC World Publishing. It is set during the turbulent sixteenth to eighteenth centuries in Europe, an age when nations and states were created and destroyed and wars reshaped the map of the continent. The game became famous for its enormous battles and for the way it combines economic management with large-scale military campaigns.

There are sixteen nations or regions to choose from: Algeria, Austria, England, France, the Netherlands, Piedmont, Poland, Portugal, Prussia, Russia, Saxony, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and Venice. Each has its own original graphics, economic and technical development, military advantages and drawbacks, as well as unique units and technologies. England is the mightiest sea power, Austria fields powerful light and heavy cavalry, and the Cossacks themselves are the pride of the Ukrainian army, so every choice leads to a different style of play.

The battles are the heart of the experience. Clashes with up to 8,000 units can be fought on a single map, with long lines of musketeers, pikemen, cavalry and artillery facing each other across open fields. Formations matter, as does the terrain, and a well-placed battery of cannons or a timely cavalry charge can decide the outcome of an entire engagement. Watching thousands of soldiers march, fire and charge remains one of the most impressive sights in classic strategy gaming.

Warfare is not limited to pitched battles. You can carry out lingering city sieges, wage guerrilla campaigns, capture commanding heights and arrange ambushes for unsuspecting enemies. Landing forces can be deployed on enemy shores, and sea battles allow fleets of ships to fight for control of the coastline. This variety lets you plan campaigns in many different ways, whether you prefer a slow war of attrition, sudden raids or a decisive strike against the heart of your rival's territory.

The economy is the foundation of every army. Peasants gather food, wood, stone, gold, iron and coal, and these resources are needed to build towns, train troops and pay for upkeep. The game system is designed to reduce per-unit control and resource micromanagement, so you can focus on wider goals such as forming a powerful economy, developing science, capturing new lands and defending your borders. Neglecting supplies can quickly leave even a large army unable to fight.

Science and architecture play an important role as well. Academies and other buildings unlock upgrades for troops, farming, mining and construction, allowing your nation to move gradually from early modern warfare to the more advanced armies of the eighteenth century. Towns grow with distinctive national buildings, from Western European houses to onion-domed churches, which gives each realm a recognisable look. Campaigns and single missions present historical situations that test your skills against computer opponents.

Cossacks: European Wars runs on Windows XP, Vista or 7 with a 1.4 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and a DirectX 9 graphics card with 64 MB of memory, and it needs only 350 MB of space. The game is available in English. For anyone interested in early modern European history and grand battles, it is a true classic of real-time strategy that still offers an impressive scale, a rich choice of nations and a satisfying blend of economy and warfare.
