About Hearts of Iron III
Hearts of Iron III is a grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive, released in August 2009 for Windows PC and Mac. It lets you play the most engaging conflict in world history, the Second World War, on all fronts, as any country and through several different scenarios. From 1936 to 1948 you guide your nation through war, diplomacy and industrial growth in what the developers describe as the most detailed Second World War game ever made.
The scope is enormous. More than 150 countries are available, from the great powers to small neutral nations, and each can be led from the uneasy years before the war through to its aftermath. Historical accuracy is combined with an exceptional freedom of choice, so you can follow the course of real events or rewrite history entirely. Thousands of historically accurate military commanders and politicians appear in the game, giving every nation its own personality and set of difficult decisions.
The world map contains more than 10,000 land provinces, which makes it five times more detailed than its predecessor and allows for very precise planning of offensives and defences. You can assign troops to theatres on the map so that wars on two fronts become manageable, while a realistic military command AI handles the details at different levels of the chain of command. Mobilisation and reserves make surprise attacks possible, letting you recreate lightning offensives or prepare a deep defensive line.
Warfare covers land, sea and air. You customise your divisions in detail with more than twenty types of brigades, control the oceans with aircraft carriers, submarines and battleships, and use your air force to defend your skies, support naval and ground operations and bomb enemy targets. A strategic warfare system makes it vital to protect the skies and seas against foreign attacks, because leaving cities open to bombing can now have devastating consequences for your industry and morale.
Beyond the battlefield, an in-depth diplomatic and political system lets you form alliances, influence other nations and decide when to enter the war. A new economic system makes it possible to buy weapons from abroad, and a completely new intelligence system offers several types of sources that reveal enemy reserves and troop movements. If your homeland falls, a government in exile can continue the struggle from abroad through underground movements and uprisings against the occupying power.
Research is handled by a flexible technology system with hundreds of categories, in which the major powers have their own unique attributes. Choosing what to develop, from tanks and aircraft to industry and doctrine, has a direct effect on your chances in the years ahead. The production screen ties everything together, as you decide which ships, divisions and planes to build with the industrial capacity and manpower you have, so careful long-term planning is just as important as success on the front line.
Hearts of Iron III runs on Windows 2000, XP or Vista with an Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+, 2 GB of RAM and a GeForce 8800 or Radeon X1900, and needs 2 GB of space. It is available in English, French, German and Spanish. For anyone who enjoys deep strategy and large historical sandboxes, it offers countless hours of planning, alliances and decisive campaigns across the entire globe during the defining war of the twentieth century.
