About Deck of Souls

Deck of Souls is a roguelite deck-building RPG by Bigboot Studios, published by HeroCraft. It mixes turn-based card battles with the punishing structure of a souls-like: you create a hero, descend through a dark pixel-art world, die, and start again a little stronger and a lot wiser. Your goal is to break out of an infinite loop and close the gates of hell for good.

The central idea is in the title. You never buy cards in a shop; you extract the souls of the enemies you defeat and turn them into new cards. Every fight therefore changes your deck, and the monsters that gave you trouble become tools you can use against the next room. Mixing abilities from different classes lets you uncover combinations the game never spells out for you.

Between battles you shape the hero as well as the deck. You choose capabilities and appearance, pick between several distinct classes, manage an inventory and equip outfits that change how a run plays. Characters such as the Soul Charmer offer equipment, charms and the map, so each descent becomes a series of small decisions about risk and reward, never a straight corridor of fights.

Bosses are where the souls-like influence shows most. They hit hard, punish careless turns and force you to read their patterns. When one falls, you decide its fate: execute it for its sins, or spare it so that it returns later to help you. Dice rolls add a touch of luck to each encounter, but planning, deck size and timing decide most fights.
