About Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a classic action platformer from the 1990s VGA era, developed by Moonlite Software and published on GOG by Apogee Entertainment. It transports you to the magical, mystical land of Lattice, where the would-be magician Hocus needs your wits and reflexes to complete the quest of his life. Terexin, leader of the Council of Wizards, sends the untried apprentice on a special mission to prove his worthiness. To become a card-carrying, fancy hat wearing wizard and claim the hand of his lady love, Hocus must conquer realms filled with unique dangers and enemies. Few have survived Terexin’s final test, because for many it is a one-way trip.

The adventure spans four episodes with 36 huge and challenging levels across 16 unique realms. After every two levels the graphics, background and enemies change completely, which gives the game great variety as you move from volcanic jungles with palm trees to starry skies above stone pillars and frozen landscapes full of giant ice crystals. Along the way Hocus meets dragons, imps, ghosts and more than 30 different monsters, demons and enemies, and each episode ends with one of four huge bosses. Smooth 360-degree scrolling with a parallax background and over 6 MB of 256-colour animated VGA graphics keep the classic look sharp and lively.

Hocus is armed with a standard magic spell, since he is still an apprentice, but he can find several potions that give him a temporary boost of magical energy. Some potions let him shoot rapidly, others help him jump higher, teleport or fire a devastating energy blast, so knowing when to use each one is a key part of the challenge. Collecting crystals, finding keys and opening the way forward keep every stage busy, while traps and enemies test your timing. Challenge dragons, demons and other dastardly denizens of the dark, and hold on to your hat for a bumpy ride.

Exciting puzzles are built into the structure of each level, so the game challenges your wits as well as your reflexes. Hidden paths, switches and locked doors reward players who look around carefully before rushing ahead. Game saves, selectable skill levels and four cheat passwords make it easy to adjust the experience to your own pace. The GOG version supports English and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is a charming pick for anyone who enjoys colourful retro platformers, magic-themed heroes and the bright pixel art of the early 1990s.
