About Kholat

Kholat is a first-person horror exploration game developed by the Polish studio IMGN.PRO and released in 2015. It is inspired by one of the most mysterious real events of the twentieth century, the Dyatlov Pass incident of 1959, when nine experienced hikers died under unexplained circumstances in the northern Ural Mountains. You travel alone to the same snowy region to discover what really happened, while the famous actor Sean Bean narrates the story and guides you through the unsettling journey.

The game is built around free exploration of a large open area of mountains, forests, caves and abandoned camps. There are no markers pointing the way. Instead you navigate with a paper map and a compass, reading coordinates from notes and slowly working out your position from landmarks. Scattered diary pages and documents reveal fragments of the expedition and the strange theories surrounding it, and putting them together is the main goal of the adventure.

The atmosphere is cold and oppressive. Snowstorms reduce visibility, the silence of the forest is broken by distant sounds, and something unnatural seems to stalk the mountainside after dark. You have no weapons, so the only way to survive is to stay alert, avoid danger and run when necessary. Camps found along the way let you save progress and rest before pushing deeper into the wilderness, where the line between reality and the supernatural begins to blur.

Kholat is played in single-player and supports controllers as well as mouse and keyboard. Built with Unreal Engine, it offers impressive lighting, detailed winter landscapes and a haunting soundtrack by Arkadiusz Reikowski. With its non-linear structure, minimal guidance and real historical mystery, it is a strong choice for players who enjoy slow-burning atmospheric horror, careful navigation and piecing a story together through careful exploration with no combat at all.
