About LEGO The Lord of the Rings

LEGO The Lord of the Rings is an action adventure developed by Traveller's Tales and released in 2012. It retells the complete film trilogy, from The Fellowship of the Ring through The Two Towers to The Return of the King, with the playful humor that the LEGO games are known for. Frodo must leave the Shire carrying a dangerous ring, and a Fellowship forms to help him reach Mount Doom: Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir and the hobbits Sam, Merry and Pippin. Famous moments such as the flight to Rivendell, the Mines of Moria and the battle of Helm's Deep are rebuilt in colorful bricks.

A special touch of this entry is the dialogue. For the first time in the series, the mini-figures speak with voice recordings taken directly from the films, so the familiar lines are delivered with the original drama and then playfully broken by LEGO jokes. Between story levels you can travel freely across an open Middle-earth, from the green hills of the Shire and Bree to Rohan, Gondor and the slopes of Mordor. Hidden chests, side quests and characters waiting for help reward curious explorers, and a map shows where you have already been.

The gameplay follows the proven LEGO formula. Every hero has abilities that matter: Legolas fires arrows at distant targets, Gimli smashes cracked walls, Sam lights fires and grows plants, and Frodo can slip on the ring to sneak past danger. Puzzles are solved by switching between characters and building objects from loose bricks. Battles against orcs, Uruk-hai, trolls, the Balrog and the Witch-king stay light and comic, with no blood. A blacksmith system lets you combine collected mithril bricks and designs into new items that grant extra powers.

The whole adventure can be played in drop-in local co-op with a split screen that adapts to where both players go, which makes it ideal for parents and children or friends on the same couch. With more than 80 playable characters, hundreds of collectibles and a free play mode that opens new areas in earlier levels, there is plenty to discover after the credits. The GOG version runs on modern Windows systems and is easy to set up. It is a warm, accessible way to experience the story of Middle-earth for fans of Tolkien and of LEGO alike.
