About Legend of Grimrock
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role-playing game with an old-school heart and a modern execution, developed by the small Finnish team Almost Human and released in 2012. A group of prisoners is sentenced to certain death by being exiled to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unknown to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by long-perished civilisations, and the only way back to daylight and freedom leads down through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back the classic challenge of the genre with grid-based movement and highly tactical real-time combat. You move your party step by step through the corridors, turning to face threats, sidestepping attacks and timing your strikes and spells carefully. Horrible monsters lurk in the dark, deadly traps wait behind innocent-looking walls, and devious hidden switches open secret passages. Every level is a hand-built space where attention to detail matters, and careless explorers rarely survive for long in the depths of Grimrock.
Puzzles and exploration are at the centre of the experience, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest sword. You create a party of four characters and customise their skills and abilities, then fight with a wide variety of weapons, cast spells by combining runes and craft potions from herbs found along the way. Hidden secrets reward careful searching, and many rooms hide pressure plates, levers and riddles that must be solved before the way forward opens.
Hardened veterans can turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap so you can map the dungeon on grid paper just like in the classics. A Dungeon Editor lets you build entirely new adventures with puzzles, traps, items and monsters of your own. The GOG version runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is in English.
