Painkiller is a reimagining of the classic first-person shooter franchise, developed by Anshar Studios and published by 3D Realms. You are trapped in Purgatory, sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven, yet the Voice of the Creator offers you one last chance at redemption. As one of the Champions, your task is to stop the fallen angel Azazel before he unleashes his demonic armies onto Earth. The heart of the game is fast-paced action against hordes of demons and titanic terrors across richly detailed gothic environments. Purgatory is designed as your playground: you jump, dash and hook across vast biomes while wielding a host of new and classic Painkiller weapons. Movement matters as much as aim, because enemies come at you in huge numbers and standing still is rarely a good idea. The variety of foes ranges from swarms of smaller demons to enormous monsters with unique powers, and the campaign builds towards encounters with the three monstrous children of Azazel, the Nephilim, each a major test of your skill and nerve.

Character choice and builds give each session its own flavour. You play as one of four distinctive Champions, Ink, Void, Sol and Roch, and every one of them has unique perks that boost energy, health, power or damage. Tarot cards add another layer, letting you enhance your abilities and combine them with other players to obliterate your foes. The campaign can be played alone with full offline support, or together with up to two other players in a squad of three, so you can decide whether to face Purgatory solo or share the carnage. Either way, the focus stays on speed, aggression and constant pressure from the demonic hordes.

Beyond the main campaign, Rogue Angel Mode takes you into a new realm of Purgatory. Here you fight for survival in handcrafted arenas that are randomised, so each attempt plays out differently and rewards quick thinking and smart use of your cards and perks. The game is rated USK 18 and offers full controller support, including DualSense pads, plus accessibility options such as adjustable text size, colour alternatives, subtitle settings and play without timed input.
